New initiative launched to deliver large-scale new homes for affordable rent

Sir Michael Lyons, a leading figure in housing and local government, has been appointed Chair of the newly created Sage Partnerships, a new initiative to build a large-scale portfolio of social and affordable homes.

Sir Michael led the well-regarded Lyons Housing Commission in 2014, chaired the BBC Trust, and is currently chair of the English Cities Fund and non-executive director of Redrow Homes.

Sage Partnerships has been established by Blackstone and will sit beside their existing registered provider, Sage Housing.

Sage Partnerships will focus on bringing much-needed institutional investment to deliver the large-scale development of homes for rent.  It will work with local authorities, Government, developers and other Registered Providers of affordable homes to unlock stalled or challenging sites. Sage Partnerships will provide funding and expertise not otherwise available to local authorities and other public sector institutions, while ensuring the public sector retains a leading role.

Sage Partnerships is a response to the recognition that more entrants with access to stable funding are needed in order to tackle the scale and significance of the affordable housing challenge in the UK.

Sir Michael Lyons said:

“I am delighted to be joining Sage Partnerships.  This role provides a practical way to deliver some of the key findings of the housing review I led in 2014, including the need for new entrants in the market and mobilising more private investment from major institutions.

“We would be delighted to hear from those in the public and private sectors as to how Sage Partnerships can work with them to deliver their ambitions for large scale new rented housing and from other key stakeholders, including Government, who want to be part of a team with substantial investment support.’

Sage Partnerships will complement sister company Sage Housing, where Sir Michael has also been appointed as a non-executive director.
